The Alqueva dam is the biggest Portuguese and Western Europe dam, situated on the Guadiana River, in Alentejo region, near the village of Alqueva.

The dam construction enabled the creation of the biggest artificial water reservoir in Europe and it as constructed in order to increase the irrigation system for the Alentejo region and for energy production in addition to other complementary activities. It presents a production capacity of electrical power of 260 MW.
